Call for Applications: Ruhr Graduate School (RGS)Fully Funded PhD in Economics

The RGS Econ has launched its application cycle for the 2026 PhD programme in Economics, with a submission deadline of March 23, 2026. The programme begins in October 2026.

There is no application fee, but only complete applications — including two reference letters — will be considered by the deadline.

Application Requirements

Candidates must submit the following materials through the online system:

  • CV (PDF)
  • Academic transcripts (Bachelor’s, Master’s, and relevant degrees combined in one PDF)
  • Motivation letter (PDF)
  • Optional: GRE/GMAT scores, English test results, writing samples (if available)

Applicants must also provide the names and email addresses of at least two academic referees. After submission, referees receive automated recommendation links directly from the system.

Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

Academic Profile and Eligibility

RGS Econ seeks candidates with outstanding academic performance, typically within the top 20% of their cohort.

Applicants are expected to hold — or be on track to complete before October — a Master’s degree in Economics or a closely related field, such as:

  • Business Administration
  • Mathematics
  • Statistics
  • Physics
  • Engineering

The degree must include formal coursework, examinations, and a written thesis.

For applicants without a German Abitur (secondary school diploma), submission of a GRE, GMAT, or comparable standardized test is strongly recommended, though not mandatory if other documentation demonstrates quantitative and analytical strength.

Language Requirements

All courses and academic activities are conducted in English. Therefore, a TOEFL or equivalent English-language certification with strong scores is highly recommended, except for applicants who:

  • Are native English speakers
  • Have completed at least six months of university study in English
  • Hold a German Abitur

Interview and Selection Timeline

Applications are reviewed by an RGS faculty selection committee. Interviews are typically conducted online and take place on a rolling basis once applications are complete.

  • Most interviews occur in late April and early May
  • Initial offers are usually extended by the end of April
  • Admissions may continue through mid-June

RGS Econ also conducts early reviews for particularly strong applications. Candidates with competing offers who have submitted a complete application may request expedited consideration.
