Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna has officially launched the first round of applications for its 42nd cycle PhD programmes for the 2026/2027 academic year. The deadline to apply is March 30, 2026 at 11:59 pm (CEST)
The call covers a wide range of doctoral programmes across sciences, engineering, social sciences, humanities, and economics, reinforcing Bologna’s position as one of Europe’s leading research institutions.
Programmes Across Disciplines
The 42nd cycle includes doctoral opportunities in fields such as:
- Economics, Management, and Public Governance
- Political and Social Sciences
- Mathematics and Physics
- Psychology
- Architecture and Advanced Engineering Sciences
- Cultural Heritage and Modern Languages
- Innovative Technologies and Sustainable Use of Mediterranean Sea Fishery Resources (FishMed-PhD)
Application Process and Eligibility
Applications must be submitted exclusively through the University’s Studenti Online portal. A non-refundable €10 application fee applies
Candidates are eligible if they hold (or will obtain by October 31, 2026) a second-cycle degree equivalent to an Italian Laurea Magistrale
Applicants with foreign degrees must provide documentation confirming authenticity and comparability.

Some programmes may require research proposals or reference letters, and candidates must declare any use of generative AI tools in research proposal preparation, in line with institutional policy
Scholarships and Funding
The call includes fully funded PhD positions, topic-specific scholarships, and reserved positions
Annual gross scholarship amounts vary by programme:
- €16,982.64 for selected humanities and interdisciplinary programmes
- €18,341.04 for programmes including Economics, Management, Physics, and Political and Social Sciences
- €19,700.76 for Mechanics and Advanced Engineering Sciences
Scholarships are paid monthly and are subject to Italian social security contributions. For 2026/2027, no additional tuition fees are required, although enrolment charges of €157.04 apply
International and Extra-Quota Opportunities
International candidates requiring visas must complete pre-enrolment procedures through the Universitaly platform after admission
In addition to standard placements, extra-quota positions are available for candidates funded by external scholarships (e.g., government grants) or apprenticeship contracts
The University also offers access to the International PhD College, which provides interdisciplinary training and potential housing support of up to €500 per month (covering up to 90% of rent, subject to conditions)
