2026 Discrimination and Diversity Workshop

The 6th Discrimination and Diversity Workshop will be held virtually on

Thursday, 10 September and Friday, 11 September 2026.

The goal of this workshop is to provide a platform for scholars conducting research on issues relating to discrimination and diversity, with a focus on Applied and Experimental Economics, to present their work and network with other experts in the field.

The workshop is held virtually to allow for greater inclusivity.

Submission of full papers or extended abstracts here by 30 April 2026.

Special Sessions Keynote Speakers:

Giovanni Peri, UC Davis

Paola Profeta, Bocconi University

Paper Sessions

The workshop features 5 paper sessions each consisting of 4 presentations. Each session has a dedicated theme and is chaired by an expert researcher.

  1. Gender in the Workplace, chaired by Libertad Gonzalez, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona School of Economics

This session investigates gender disparities and dynamics within workplace environments. It invites research exploring how biases, institutional frameworks, and incentive structures shape gender representation, wage gaps, and career progression. Contributions analysing interventions or policies that promote equitable employment opportunities and organizational diversity are especially welcome.

2. Healthcare Disparities, chaired by Heike Henning Schmidt, University of Bonn

This session examines disparities in access to and quality of health care across social and demographic groups. It welcomes research analysing how economic, institutional, and behavioural factors shape medical decisions, outcomes, and health inequalities. Both empirical and theoretical studies on mechanisms driving unequal health care experiences are encouraged.

3. LGBTQ+ and Diverse Gender Identities, chaired by Dario Sansone, University of Exeter

This session explores the economic and social dimensions of LGBTQ+ and diverse gender identities, focusing on how discrimination, policy frameworks, and cultural norms shape labour market outcomes, health, education, and social inclusion. It encourages experimental, quasi-experimental and theoretical research addressing systemic inequities, representation, and policy effectiveness in promoting equality and well-being.

4. Migration and Integration, chaired by Andreas Steinmayr, University of Innsbruck

This session examines the economic and social integration of immigrants, focusing on how discrimination, institutions, and policy shape opportunities and outcomes. It welcomes work on labour market participation, education, health, and social inclusion, as well as attitudes toward migration and their implications for host societies. Both empirical and theoretical approaches are encouraged.

5. Inequality in Crime and Justice chaired by Mariyana Zapryanova, Smith College

This session examines inequalities and discrimination across crime, law enforcement, and the justice system. It welcomes research on how socioeconomic status, race, gender, and other identities shape exposure to crime, treatment by legal institutions, and justice outcomes. Both empirical and theoretical contributions on accountability and equity in criminal justice systems are encouraged.

Submissions

We especially encourage submissions from early-career researchers and doctoral students, and from all geographic areas, to submit work on these five listed topics. Given the virtual format of the workshop, we will have sessions that cater to different time zones.

You can submit a full paper or extended abstract (4,000 characters) via the online form by 30 April 2026.

Notification of acceptance: By the end of June 2026.

Outstanding Paper Awards

To promote and encourage the excellent research by junior researchers the University of Exeter and the EEA Standing Committee on Minorities in Economics sponsor two Outstanding Paper Awards worth £/€500.

The awards will be given to the two most outstanding papers presented by early-career researchers, and the recipients will be announced at the workshop.
